Artist Spotlight w/ Taarini Ravjit Singh

Apr 4, 2023

First, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Hellooo! I'm Taarini, a visual designer based in India.

I like telling stories through clay, illustrations, and GIFs!

Although I have a formal background in Animation Film Design, my work primarily centers around Illustration. I've discovered that my skills are most effective during the pre-production phase of animation projects, where I can serve as an art director. In this role, I can make decisions on the visual treatment, look and feel, and overall aesthetic of the project to ensure that the outcome aligns with the creative vision, keeping in mind an animation workflow.

My illustration style is whimsical, playful, and intricate; I also love experimenting with color, have a strong aesthetic sense, and find pretty things everywhere I go.

When I'm not creating art, you will probably find me hanging out with my tri-pawed bat pup, Ori. I also enjoy hiking and being outdoors, playing football, and sticking googly eyes where they don't belong! I also recently started making hand poked tattoos and am excited to do more of those in my drawing style!

Working with my hands and raw materials is incredibly meditative for me, and I find it to be a source of great joy and fulfillment!

Can you tell us about your experience and the role you are primarily filling?

I've worked at a 2D Animation Agency and a Design Research Organization, where I gained valuable experience creating visuals that effectively convey information-heavy content. These opportunities have sharpened my skills and honed my ability to create compelling visuals that leave a lasting impression.

I also had the opportunity to work on a Children's Book, which was a really exciting process and a rewarding experience. Creating content for children is something I hope to do more of!

Beyond illustration and animation, I'm also passionate about sculpting and creating ceramics. I firmly believe that exploring different mediums helps me stay creative and inspired, and allows me to bring a unique perspective to my work. Working with my hands and raw materials is incredibly meditative for me, and I find it to be a source of great joy and fulfillment!

If you could speak directly to the resourcing gods and powers that be, what would be your ideal project?

I would ask the resourcing gods to give me more opportunities to collaborate with authors who build worlds I could help them visualize. I'm thrilled at the prospect of creating beautiful end products that showcase our joint vision!

I'm also excited about working closely with scientists in the fields of wildlife and conservation to translate their important findings into visually appealing and easy-to-understand visuals, which will help spread awareness and educate people about these critical topics engagingly and effectively!

Do you have any dream clients?

Working in the field and creating visuals for National Geographic would be an amazing experience. HarperCollins UK and Penguin USA are publishing houses that have published some of my all-time favorite authors and books, so working with and for them would be an absolute dream come true. Having played football throughout my childhood, sports have always been a huge part of my life, so working with Nike would also be an incredibly cool opportunity!

Lastly, do you have any memorable stories, life lessons, or tall tales you can share from your adventures as a freelancer?

I worked on a project with Mongabay India, a non-profit conservation and environmental science news platform. The project was about a genus of birds called Wagtails, intending to raise awareness about them

The animated short was well-received by the locals of Valparai, Tamil Nadu, a town through which the bird migrates. It was heartwarming to learn that the animated short inspired the children in the schools of Valparai to take up birdwatching and become more attentive to our feathered friends, resulting in the target audience learning more about the birds.

I am honored that our film on the mugger received a 2021 @JacksonWild Special Jury recognition!
