Artist Spotlight w/ NWJS

Jun 16, 2023

First, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

We are Lina Schubert and Florentin Berger, a 3D design/animation duo from Vienna, Austria. We love exploring visual realities and digital nature at the intersection of art and design, retelling the stories of objects. We also draw inspiration from our varied backgrounds, namely cultural anthropology, theatre, advertising, music, graphic design, and illustration.

Working closely as a duo gives us the opportunity to quickly bounce ideas off each other and dive deep into our heavily research-driven design process.

Sometimes, being active in so many creative fields at once can feel overwhelming, but once you connect all the dots, it creates such a fulfilling atmosphere where everything you do influences and enriches the other.

Can you tell us about your experience and the role you are primarily filling?

We both freelanced for a couple of years before we started working together as NO WORRIES JUST SHAPES in the summer of 2022. However, our collaborative work started earlier with a photography project in 2017 called "no worries just sad," which is also the origin story of our studio name.

We both have a pattern-seeking tendency and roamed around various cities in Europe, trying to capture abstract compositions in urban architecture. Therefore, working together was not completely new to us. When we transitioned to creating 3D content together, we were able to utilize much of our previous experience, from lighting to project management.

Nowadays, we mainly focus on projects for brands, artists, and cultural institutions, as well as collaborating with photographers and other creatives.

If you could speak directly to the resourcing gods and powers that be, what would be your ideal project?

Creative freedom is always wonderful, of course. However, it is hard for us to pin down one ideal project since we love to challenge our skillset and have a broad interest in visual communication, design, and illustration.

Therefore, every new project inherently has the possibility of being ideal.

Do you have any dream clients?

It is the same as with ideal projects. We are interested in working with young startups, for example, but also with high-fashion and luxury brands. Moreover, big museums/festivals and companies such as Google or Apple would be dream clients to work with.

Lastly, do you have any memorable stories, life lessons, or tall tales you can share from your adventures as a freelancer?

Sometimes, being active in so many creative fields at once can feel overwhelming, but once you connect all the dots, it creates such a fulfilling atmosphere where everything you do influences and enriches the other.

This applies to connecting with other designers and visual artists too, of course. It can get a bit lonely, and we know that many creatives feel the same way about always working in front of a screen and knowing their colleagues only from Instagram or Twitter.

That's why we started a regular's table together with a group of other motion designers, illustrators, and 3D artists in Vienna. Therefore, if you're in the area and want to join, please contact us!
