Artist Spotlight w/ Gino Lloreda Álvarez

May 9, 2023

First, can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am an animator from Yumbo, Colombia and I've been animating for about 6 years now, I love rollerblading and spending time with my family. I studied audiovisual production where I found After Effects, and since then I've been looking for the perfect ease on those graphs (still working on it).

Don't be afraid to reach out to big studios or brands/clients… I have had the pleasure to work on The Wanderers, a gigantic project as animator, and it all started with Discord message.

Can you tell us about your experience and the role you are primarily filling?

When I finished school, I wasn't sure about what I will do next, so I started studying electronics, then something with live audio for concerts and I even tried as a salesperson in a children's clothing store. In the end I failed in all of these... Greatly.

Years later I watched a really cool project from a friend illustrator, it was a kinetic typography video of a song, it was a moment of revelation for me, I was very excited about the idea of work doing these kinds of videos. This happened when I was studying audiovisual production, so I left the cameras and lights and grabbed a computer to start making the title sequences for the projects of my study mates (even when they don't need it).

Now that friend who introduces me to animation is my wife, and we have worked together since then as freelancers, she is an amazing illustrator and I try to handle the motion of her incredible work.

If you could speak directly to the resourcing gods and powers that be, what would be your ideal project?

I would say that my ideal project would be one that gathers incredible artists and lets us explore as much as we can while we keep learning from each other. I think it is very important to embrace the process and enjoy it as much as you can. No matter the size of the brand or if it's a big client. There aren't many schools that focus on animation in my country, and I've learnt that working with people who love what they're doing is a great way to learn.

Do you have any dream clients?

A dream client for me would be Blizzard, since I spent several years playing World of Warcraft. I think it would be nice to cast some keyframes in one of their projects.

Lastly, do you have any memorable stories, life lessons, or tall tales you can share from your adventures as a freelancer?

Don't be afraid to reach out to big studios or brands/clients, at the end of the day we are all part of the same industry, work on your portfolio and share that thing everywhere. I have had the pleasure to work on The Wanderers, a gigantic project as animator, and it all started with Discord message.
